How to use it

An appointment must be made before turning up. This is because Fife Archives must be the smallest facility of its type in the country. There are just two desks and one member of staff shoehorned into a tiny room. What it lacks in size is easily made up in service. The desks were positioned opposite the window making light a problem but the staff moved the table into the middle of the room and provided a step ladder so I could take pictures of the larger maps from above. Some of the material is on aperture cards so although there is a reader there are no facilities for printouts on site. Obtaining copies was made by simply photographing the images on screen with my back facing the window to block out excess light!

Items found here

  • Lots of maps and plans for the road network in Glenrothes. Some is on maps and others on aperture cards and microfilm. Most of the stuff is duplicated so there are multiple copies of the same plan.
  • Some plans and correspondence for the A92 East Fife Regional Road. Some of these show various lines including a link to the M90 at Masterton which was the original intention during the early 1960s.
