This file is stuffed to the gills full of photographs documenting the major new roads constructed in the 1920s and 1930s, including the Kingston Bypass, Purley Way, Guildford and Godalming Bypass, Great West Road and the Winchester Bypass. There are also plenty of other road schemes, and some lovely photos of the A82 along Loch Ness.

The file also contains a list of what the photos are, though of course nothing is in order any more, plus some tedious waffle about the original cost of the photos, their storage and their usage. But who cares when the photos are this good.

If you can't spend all day drooling over this file, you're not a road enthusiast.
The Port Talbot section of the M4 is one of the archetypical brutalist motorway plans that could only have happened in the 1960s, demolishing houses like they were going out of fashion. As if the original construction (documented in MT 39/1061 and elsewhere) wasn't bad enough, even after the motorway was finished, houses were still being pulled down due to subsidence, and becoming unsellable because nobody wanted their upstairs bedroom to be within 30ft of a major motorway. This file consists of a picture of a prototype for a trafficator, an early type of electro-mechanical signalling device that predates modern indicators and popular with cars in the 1920s.

Unfortunately, all the file has is the photograph and nothing else about the subject whatsoever. Even Wikipedia has more on this topic.

Context
The "Trunk Road Master Plan" series of reports were produced by the Ministry of Transport from the late 1950s onwards in order to assess the quality of postwar British roads and what to do with them.

Contents
This file covers the route of the A20 from London to Dover, including details of the then relatively new Maidstone and Ashford bypasses. The extension of the M20 west of Ditton is also discussed, replacing an earlier plan to bypass the village to the south.

East of Maidstone, a short bypass was planned around Leeds Castle (which seems to eat into the current castle grounds) and Sellinge, but otherwise there are no plans to improve the route beyond online dualling and widening. The file spends time speculating over what difference the Channel Tunnel will make on traffic, but ultimately decides the A2 can help share the load of traffic once the M2 is built (which happened a few years after the timeframe of this). (This goes some way to explaining why the M20 between junctions 8 - 9 was built years after everything else).

The file includes a strip-map of the A20 / M20 corridor with proposed bypasses along it, and a list of other planned work improvements.
This file documents the background and events leading up to the second (southbound) Blackwall Tunnel. The original (northbound) tunnel, designed for horsebound traffic, had become unsuitable by the 1930s, so various solutions were proposed. Cheap and cheerful things like lots of traffic lights, and a slightly off-the-wall scheme to make the Blackwall and Rotherhithe Tunnels part of an elaborate one-way system across the Thames were put forward. Anyway, I intend to pop up to TNA some time before the next awayday in a few weeks and pull out anything that's relevant (such as the newspaper clippings of the M50's construction and opening I took to Ross on Wye, not that anyone except me bothered to look at them).

Any ideas? I was thinking of something to do with the original M62 and the East Lancs Road but my TNA search-fu is not up to par this morning. --Ritchie333 11:26, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
:Activity? Yes, it gets busy once a year or so! I've been doing some tidying up to Artefacts and integrating it with our personal pages. Makes a lot more sense now.

:I'm hoping to get to TNA on Thursday - would have been Monday but they're closed Mondays now, which is less than helpful. If we're shopping for things to bring, I'll bring along (perhaps see if I can print?) my camera copy of MT 119/116. It shows construction plans for the original bit of M62, but not entirely as-built. There's a layout for a "future" junction where the Carrington Spur now is, which is shown as a full trumpet interchange, and a strangely-configured roundabout interchange with the A580. I can certainly bring that.

:I'm not sure I'll have time to do any special M62 research, but if you do, Chris's shopping list includes "MT 95/248 and MT 95/249 - Barton Bridge special road and plans 1956-63". If you want to dig out some M62 stuff I'd start there.
I've added some pages today, but I think the National Archives catalogue link numbers are all wrong. Since TNA moved over to using the new Discovery interface, I can't obviously find where the right ID is - I picked what looked to be the right thing off the address bar, and it's not. Can you advise? Ritchie333 (talk) 14:05, 22 March 2014 (CDT)

:Yes, it's a problem. I've noticed it but I don't have a solution yet! I wonder if the better thing to do is find out whether you can call up a file on TNA's catalogue by encoding the file reference in the URL - that way, instead of manually changing all the files, I can just rewrite the header template to generate a new link from the page title. I'll have to see. --chris5156 (talk) 08:50, 23 March 2014 (CDT)

:Update: I've now fixed this to do exactly what I just suggested. The template now passes the file reference to a little PHP script I wrote which runs a search for you on the Discovery catalogue. "nacatref" in Template:Header is no longer used. --chris5156 (talk) 09:58, 23 March 2014 (CDT)
The Worboys report gave us modern British road signs as we know them today. In order to publicise their use and increase public awareness, the Ministry of Transport went on a "road show" around the country, setting up exhibitions in various town halls so people could come and have a look and familiarise themselves with them.
The centrepiece of the file is six A4 black and white photographs showing the exhibition stands inside the House of Commons on 4 July 1963, ready to be taken round the country. The plans for the M1 are stored in the National Archives, but they're split into separate groups. This is because the initial section of the M1 didn't go through public enquiry at the same time - the main section of the motorway from Luton to east of Dunchurch was approved in 1956, presumably because it mostly passed through the middle of nowhere. The Dunchurch Bypass and Watford - Luton sections were approved in 1957, the Crick extension in 1958, and all the connecting roads to make everything join up were finally passed through in early 1959 just before the bulldozers turned up.

Contents
This file contains the full plans, including the statutory instruments, of the M1 between Luton and the M45, and the M45 to the A45 east of Dunchurch. The line of the motorway is marked out on a six-inch map, and there are further maps showing every single junction and bridge that the M1 was to cross, including all footpaths.
This file contains the various plans of how to improve London's transport infrastructure in the 1960s and beyond. It includes a number of maps showing junction remodelling in the West End, including a proposal to demolish Cambridge Circus and replace it with a one way "squareabout".
Context
The Worboys report gave us modern British road signs as we know them today. In order to publicise their use and increase public awareness, the Ministry of Transport went on a "road show" around the country, setting up exhibitions in various town halls so people could come and have a look and familiarise themselves with them.

Contents
The centrepiece of the file is six A4 black and white photographs showing the exhibition stands inside the House of Commons on 4 July 1963, ready to be taken round the country. The contrast between the modern Warboys signs and the older architecture of the Palace of Westminster is quite interesting.
Context
Like most post war plans for towns, Port Talbot needed a bypass. However, the imposing geography of a town sandwiched between docklands and mountains made things a little difficult. The option of going to the west was flatly rejected because the docks needed rejuvenating to bring badly needed employment to South Wales. So the only way was up against the mountain and flattening anything that got in the way, chapels and all.

Not surprisingly, the local council and residents were up in arms about it, and it stalled at the first public enquiry in September 1949. Of course, it eventually got built anyway and is now part of the M4. The road was planned as a motorway from the word go, though at this stage it was assumed it would still be the A48.

Contents
The file includes several hand drawn maps of Port Talbot, including several in-depth street plans ominously marking houses with an 'x' where they were to be met by the bulldozer. There's also an early plan of what's now M4 junction 40, which back then was an at grade roundabout with the A4107.

There are also numerous cuttings from local newspapers that follow the story of the planned route of the bypass and its fall at the public enquiry.

Context
After the attempt to create a series of 3 inch / mile maps of London failed in the 1930s, the project was revisited after the war and looked at again. It was still not deemed commercially viable enough, and the emerging 1:25,000 maps covered the area sufficiently well. A-Z by this time had become established as the leading London street map maker, and the OS never really caught up again.

Contents
The file contains a few cover samples of a map, and a "mockup" which shows how the map would fold up (similar to a one inch map but with three folds instead of two) using a blank sheet of paper as a sample.

Context
By the end of the 1920s, the Ordnance Survey found that Bartholomew, AA and other map publishers were leading the way regarding in-depth coverage of London, and wanted to catch up. They started planning a series of 3 inch / mile street or district maps of London, but were hampered with out of date surveys and lack of available manpower. The project was killed off, only to be resurrected after the war (see OS1/338) before being finally thrown on the scrapheap in favour of the then brand new 1:25,000 maps, which were deemed "good enough".

Since the map itself didn't take off, the less said about an accompanying Gazetteer of London that was also proposed, the better.

Contents
As well as the expected correspondence between the Ministry of Transport and the Ordnance Survey, there are a couple of draft maps of the Woolwich / Catford area produced, including the A205 under construction between east of Catford and the A20. There's also a short extract from an AA map showing one ways and no right turns along Oxford Street - clearly as important then as it is now.
This file contains everything you ever needed to know about "The Kingston Outer Bye Pass Road" (as described in the file). It's full of tidbits of information, including the fact that the Sutton Bypass was built at the same time as part of the same contract, and when construction started in 1923, it was planned to take the A3 number from the word go (the A239 is never mentioned).

Along the way, it details construction dates, plans of the basic route and specific junctions including tricky bits where property had to be demolished, engineer reports on the overall project, and minutes from the opening ceremony in 1927 that states, amongst other things, that tea should be served. Gosh.

What is held here
By legal requirement, anything ever commercially published has to be stored in the British Library. Consequently, they have an extensive collection of maps. Due to the destruction of the Ordnance Survey's archive facilities during World War II, they contain essential mapping information that is hard to find elsewhere. Access to the library is difficult, but rewarding.

How to use it
Come out of St Pancras or Euston station and follow signs. It's on the A501, but don't expect to be able to park anywhere.

Before you can access anything in the library, you must register for a reader's pass. The BL will give these out if they are reasonably sure you are looking for items that only they have, but you need to do your homework first! You cannot just turn up with some ID and expect to get in.

First, have a look at The British Library's online catalogue and make a note of the shelfmarks of items you want to have a look at.

Next, you need to pre-register for a reader's ticket. Follow the instructions, and print out the reader number that you are given with.

When you enter the BL, you'll be given a quick search by security. Reader's registration is upstairs to the Upper Ground floor and to the right. Give the clerk your printed out pre-registration form and complete the application using one of the available terminals. You'll be given a ticket number - when your number is called out, go to the desk where a clerk will give you a quick interview to check you really want to be here, and know what you're talking about, or whether you're just a confused numpty who thought you might be able to borrow the latest Mills & Boon and talk your way around not having a valid proof of address.

Ritchie turned up with the required ID, a printout of the pre-registration form and a list of shelfmarks, and got a pass almost immediately. Your mileage may vary.

Having obtained a pass, you will need to go to the locker room in the basement to drop off coats and bags. You are only allowed pencils, paper and clear plastic bags inside the BL - when you register for a pass, you'll be given a specific list of things you can't take in.

Facilities
The map room is on the third floor, and contains large tables for spreading out maps on, similar to the second floor in the National Archives. Once you're registered, you can wander up to a terminal and start ordering things. You need to add items to the reservation list first, which will check their availability, then you can click on "Request item" to get them.

The online catalogue is rather byzantine and unhelpful. Don't expect to be able to do nice searches like "MT photographs" that you can do in the National Archives that instantly retrieve potential treasures. Items take about 70 minutes to retrieve for storing, and you can only order 4 items at a time. However, you can at least reserve them the day before you visit. In fact, doing your homework before you go seems to be essential for visiting the BL.

The BL do not allow cameras at all, so don't pull out your iPhone and start snapping away.

There are a number of restaurants in the BL. Food is a bit nicer than the National Archives' cafe, but about twice as expensive.

Opening hours
The British Library's opening hours can be found here.

Items found here
This file discusses the projects to construct the various bridges along the Maidenhead By-Pass, most principally the one over the Thames, which takes up the bulk of the discussion. This file is little more than a few bits of discussion about who pays for the map and who should do the cover, along with a bunch of people saying "thanks for the map - it's great" to the OS. But as for the actual map itself - you'll have to look elsewhere, I'm afraid
It's the 1964 Ten Mile Map of Britain, Sheet 2! What more can one say?
Includes four mile inserts for London, the Midlands and Manchester, and marks the first appearance of motorways on a ten mile map.
Richie Swann ran full speed to the copying desk and demanded a CD scan of it immediately or else there would be trouble. Of course, since the scan doesn't come out of copyright until 2015, there really wasn't a need to rush, was there?
