What is held here
The Archives is the main resource for the City Council's archives and documents. It also holds some items from elsewhere in Staffordshire where appropriate. There are reasonably extensive holdings of the regional Express and Star newspaper as well as other relevant local bodies.

How to use it
The Archives are located in the historic Molineux Hotel just north of the Inner Ring Road and right behind the Jack Harris Stand (South Bank) of the Molineux stadium. The Archives has its own free car park hidden away behind the building and accessible via Whitmore Hill, which itself is only accessible southbound along Waterloo Road. If you are using the car park, you must register your registration number at reception. Alternatively, park anywhere you like in the city centre, or access via public transport - the main High Level railway station and bus station are both close enough to be accessible on foot. There's no food or drink available in the Archives themselves, but as it's basically right in the city centre, there's plenty of choice there.

You need to hold an Archives Card to visit. If you don't hold a card, the helpful reception staff will sort you out with one, but it's recommended to apply online before you go. Bags and coats must be placed in a locker on the ground floor, whilst the archive retrieval facilities are on the first floor.

Most items can be ordered via the main desk. There are some "public access" books stored reference library style; and there's also a Map Room, which sounds more impressive than it is, but it has a nice large table in the middle of the room, and is a lot quieter than the main room. Most maps in the map room are not for public access, despite the cabinets all being unlocked and no staff being based in that room...

Items are requested by completing small slips of paper with item number, title, and your name and ticket number. Most items have to be retrieved from a back room, so there may be long waits. Note that it's a lot easier to take your own laptop to use the online catalogue than trying to use one of small number of PCs.

The Archive also holds the records of the former West Midlands Metropolitan County Council, although they merely store there and Birmingham City Council is the lead authority. Beware that the WMMCC Archives are completely unindexed.

Items found here
* Full information regarding the Inner Ring Road
* Copies of 1950s and 1960s Development Plans
* Copies of WW2 plans for post-war development, including upgrades to road system in city

The British Library holds (as a legal requirement) most published works in the UK. This includes most major maps produced by the Ordnance Survey and elsewhere, and anything published by HMSO.

It is important to note that as a legal deposit library that the law states that the BL must be offered a copy of any works, but tha the BL does not have to accept them. This means that, for example, they do not hold every revision of every MoT map published.

What is held here
By legal requirement, anything ever commercially published has to be offered to the British Library. Consequently, they have an extensive collection of maps. Due to the destruction of the Ordnance Survey's archive facilities during World War II, they contain essential mapping information that is hard to find elsewhere. Access to the library is difficult, but rewarding.

How to use it
Come out of St Pancras or Euston station and follow signs. It's on the A501, but don't expect to be able to park anywhere.

Before you can access anything in the library, you must register for a reader's pass. The BL will give these out if they are reasonably sure you are looking for items that only they have, but you need to do your homework first! You cannot just turn up with some ID and expect to get in.

First, have a look at The British Library's online catalogue and make a note of the shelfmarks of items you want to have a look at.

Next, you need to pre-register for a reader's ticket. Follow the instructions, and print out the reader number that you are given with.

When you enter the BL, you'll be given a quick search by security. Reader's registration is upstairs to the Upper Ground floor and to the right. Give the clerk your printed out pre-registration form and complete the application using one of the available terminals. You'll be given a ticket number - when your number is called out, go to the desk where a clerk will give you a quick interview to check you really want to be here, and know what you're talking about, or whether you're just a confused numpty who thought you might be able to borrow the latest Mills & Boon and talk your way around not having a valid proof of address.

Ritchie turned up with the required ID, a printout of the pre-registration form and a list of shelfmarks, and got a pass almost immediately. Your mileage may vary.

Having obtained a pass, you will need to go to the locker room in the basement to drop off coats and bags. You are only allowed pencils, paper and clear plastic bags inside the BL - when you register for a pass, you'll be given a specific list of things you can't take in.

Facilities
The map room is on the third floor, and contains large tables for spreading out maps on, similar to the second floor in the National Archives. Once you're registered, you can wander up to a terminal and start ordering things. You need to add items to the reservation list first, which will check their availability, then you can click on "Request item" to get them.

The online catalogue is rather byzantine and unhelpful. Don't expect to be able to do nice searches like "MT photographs" that you can do in the National Archives that instantly retrieve potential treasures. Items take about 70 minutes to retrieve for storing, and you can only order 4 items at a time. However, you can at least reserve them the day before you visit. In fact, doing your homework before you go seems to be essential for visiting the BL.

The BL do not allow cameras at all, so don't pull out your iPhone and start snapping away.

There are a number of restaurants in the BL. Food is a bit nicer than the National Archives' cafe, but about twice as expensive.

Opening hours
The British Library's opening hours can be found here.

Items found here
What is held here
By legal requirement, anything ever commercially published has to be offered to the British Library.

Context
Up to the 1970s, the British Road Federation were a pseudo-think tank pushing for further investment in the road network.

This is a relatively early example of their ideas, split into several sections such as "A Modern Road System", "Roads in Cities and Large Towns", "Trunk Roads", "Motorways" and "Country Roads".

It's quite lavishly illustrated with various roads from outside the UK, and surprisingly for a book of its time, quite a number of roads from within the UK and artist impressions of what is now the M1 and M6 through various parts of England such as southern Staffordshire, northern Lancashire and Westmorland.

Overall, quite a nice publication showing the thinking of 1950 as to how the road network should be improved.

Contents of Note
* Explanation of 1950s thinking around urban roads, for example, the difference in functionality between Inner and Outer Ring Roads
* Suggestions of how motorway signage should work, nearly a decade prior to the Anderson Report
* General ideas around improvements for long-distance roads
* Suggestions as to what to be done with Class III and Unclassified roads, which uses quite a lot of words to say "basically no change"!
This week, on Roads in...

We talk about costs, flexible standards and open decisions. Yes, it's the late 1970s, and with it comes a review and cost cutting. Specifically called out within the wordy parts of the report are the reduction in standards of the M54 from D3M to D2M; A27 between Havant and Chichester no longer being motorway; and even that the M40 was up in the air and might well have been constructed as all-purpose between Oxford and Warwick.

Contents of Note
* M67 across the Pennines 1977 cancellation referenced
* M602 Spur to Salford Docks
* M69/A47 Spur cancelled
* A604 M1-A1 Link appears
* Ringway 3 between M4 and M1 still in programme
* M23 Mitcham - Hooley still in programme
* M12 South Woodford - Brentwood still in programme
* A6(M) Stockport, yes, you've guessed it, it's still there.
* The rather brilliant line M65 M6/M61 - Whitebirk (this section to be all-purpose road). So clearly not M65 then!
* M15 has become A406
This edition of Roads in... is extremely exciting. It has two volumes!

What's slightly less exciting is that is means that there's twice as many covers as usual for the same amount of content. However, it does at least give a picture of the road construction programme half way between the quiet point of National Roads England 1985 and Roads for Prosperity (1989). There aren't any 1986 or 1988 editions, so don't bother looking for them.
Ah, 1994. When Roads for Prosperity (1989) was definitely becoming a thing of the past.

This report details a number of RfP projects that bit the dust very quickly in the 1993 review, as well as the odd new one that slipped through the net.

Contents of Note
* Cancellation of M12 (the M25 - Chelmsford version)
* Cancellation of the southern and western sides of the Preston Motorway Box
* Cancellation of the M56-M62 link motorway SW of Manchester
* Cancellation of M62 - M1 Link in Yorkshire
* Big list of all Trunk Roads completed between 1990 and 1994 including opening dates
* Cancellation (yet again) of the M1 Scratchwood Link (nee Stirling Corner Link)
* Western Orbital Route listed at the top of Priority 1 schemes. I wonder how that went...
The M25 was completed in 1986 when the final two sections, from junction 19 to 23 and from junction 3 to 5, were opened to traffic. The occasion was marked by the publication of this commemorative brochure.

Unlike its ancestor, the Preston Bypass Official Opening booklet, this one is a true child of the eighties: it's mostly stuffed with adverts for carphones and investment banks, and a fair few self-aggrandising ones for civil engineering contractors, who herald their own role in the scheme, however small.

It pays lip service to the Ringways proposals (all of one sentence) and for the most part whitewashes the fact that the M25 is a second-best bodge. This book, however, remains a very interesting and worthwhile snapshot of the jubilation that was felt on the road's completion and the rather naive hopes that were held out for it when it was first opened.

Context
The Preston By-pass, Britain's first motorway, was opened in December 1958 by the Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan. This is the booklet issued for guests attending the opening ceremony. It discusses the road's inception and its difficult construction, and features many unique pictures of the road under construction and nearing completion.

The booklet also discusses other Lancashire road plans in the vicinity.
Context
It used to be that road schemes were accompanied by glossy booklets proclaiming their utopian wonders. Some - like the Preston By-pass Official Opening (1958) - are wholly justified in their excitement about an important road scheme. Others - like this one - are beautifully packaged mementos of wholly underwhelming road schemes.

This one commemorates the opening of a bit of road in Skelmersdale and a bit of road near Skelmersdale, neither of which was opened in anything like their final commemoration, and which are separated by several miles.

It's still interesting, though, for the old pictures of the M58 when it was still a single-carriageway road, for the pictures of a brand-new Skelmersdale, and for the over-ambitious and never-to-be-realised proposals for what they hoped it would look like when it was all finished off.

They're really useful snapshots of the overall picture at the time of publication - including a lot of schemes that ended up never being constructed, which means these are really brilliant at helping to know where and when to target future research. Later editions removed Principal roads and concentrated only on the Trunk network, and so are slightly less interesting.
* Ringway 3 Uxbridge Road (A.4020) to M1 including link to North Orbital Road in preparation pool.
* M1 Stirling Corner Link was still programmed in at this time with a cost of £1.9 million
* Few photos in the middle of schemes opened during the year
* Fold out map at the back showing a national overview of the "Primary Trunk Network", which is a horribly confusing phrase - it's unrelated to Primary Routes, but is related to Trunk Roads.

Roads in England and Roads in Scotland reports (and their less consistently named later cousins) were initially annual reports on the state of Trunk and Principal road construction - from landing in the preparation pool to opening, often with costs, lengths, numbers etc.

They're really useful snapshots of the overall pictures at the time of publication. Later editions removed Principal roads and concentrated only on the Trunk network, and so are slightly less interesting.

There's occasionally a bit of mapping (well, overviews) and some pretty pictures. Anyone who isn't a hardcore road enthusiast would probably find them quite dull mind...
