As befits the main route from Lancashire to Yorkshire, this booklet is a goldmine of engineering information regarding the section between Eccles, Lancashire and Outlane, Yorkshire. It's got an entire chapter on the Scammonden Dam and tells the construction story of the Scammonden Bridge.

Shockingly, this is yet another one in the Roads in England series of reports, detailing the state of road construction from the year in the title.

It's basically full of big tables organised firstly by Trunk or Principal roads, then by region, and finally by top-tier local authority. They include scheme names, lengths, costs, and planned route numbers, but don't include improvements for less than £250k.

* M60 Carrington Spur in preparation pool
* M62 Stretford-Eccles Bypass widening to three lanes between Grange Road bridge and Bridgwater Canal bridge was opened in this year for £0.4 million
* Leeds North-East Motorway (Great Wilson Street to Inner Ring Road) in preparation pool for a cost of £4.7million
* A1 Grade Separation at Black Cat (A.428) in preparation pool. Forty years later and it's still in a little-known website's list of Bad Junctions.
* Ringway 3 to Foulness in preparation pool - no number given but this is the M12 to Maplin scheme.

'''Roads in England''' and '''Roads in Scotland''' reports (and their less consistently named later cousins) were initially annual reports on the state of Trunk and Principal road construction - from landing in the preparation pool to opening, often with costs, lengths, numbers etc.

They're really useful snapshots of the overall picture at the time of publication - including a lot of schemes that ended up never being constructed, which means these are really brilliant at helping to know where and when to target future research. Later editions removed Principal roads and concentrated only on the Trunk network, and so are slightly less interesting.

There's occasionally a bit of mapping (well, overviews) and some pretty pictures.

Anyone who isn't a hardcore road enthusiast would probably find them quite dull mind...

* M1 Stirling Corner Link was still programmed in at this time with a cost of £1.9 million
* Few photos in the middle of schemes opened during the year
* Fold out map at the back showing a national overview of the "Primary Trunk Network", which is a horribly confusing phrase - it's unrelated to Primary Routes, but is related to Trunk Roads.
