How to use it
The Record Office is located on a side road near the city centre. The archives operates via the CARN ticket system and you need to sign in before being allowed in the archive area. Finding records is made using the PC's situated in the searchroom and entering the relevant information onto document request slips. Documents normally arrive within 30 minutes of ordering although many are stored off site and require ordering a week in advance. Unfortunately the online catalogue doesn't always show which documents are off site and it's pot luck if you have to make a return visit a week later to view them. Staff refer to off site documents as being stored at the 'Salt Mine'.
