Context

This file - and its relatives, GLC/DG/PTI/P/05/031 and GLC/DG/PTI/P/05/032, are three very tedious files, stuffed full of unenlightening paperwork. Wade through them and the results are not particularly rewarding.

The bottom line is that the London County Council, and then the Greater London Council, wanted to improve the A2 and proposed to do that by providing a bypass that went alongside the railway through Eltham. These three files contain literally every piffling bit of correspondence that was ever entered into on that matter.

Here we learn:

  • The "Eltham A.2 Residents' Protection Association" didn't like the line of the bypass and proposed their own, which blasted a random line through suburbia north of Eltham. The fact that their plan was just as distructive didn't seem to matter because their only concern was that it was destroying someone else's house.
  • A small number of properties were acquired ahead of the issue of CPOs, for various dull reasons.
