Context

More dry correspondence, in the main, thanks once again to the GLC/DG/PTI/P/05 series. We learn a few scraps of worthwhile information here, such as:

• A toll of 2s. was considered and rejected, on the grounds that it would cause a large proportion of traffic to divert to the nearby, badly congested Blackwall Tunnels.
• The method of construction was to be sunken pre-cast concrete sections.
• One early plan was for three bores, in the configuration 3+2+3 lanes, but in the end four two-lane bores were chosen.
• The motorway would have been dual four-lane throughout, with hard shoulders on both sides of both carriageways. At the tunnel mouth the hard shoulders were to finish and each carriageway would split in two.
• A stayed girder bridge, carrying dual four lanes, was investigated but decided against.

There are frequent references to "attached plans" but, in the best tradition of archive documents, they aren't.
