Context

In the 1950s and 60s there were firm plans for the London County Council to substantially improve Vauxhall Cross, the major road junction at the east end of Vauxhall Bridge on the edge of Central London. The nature of that improvement scheme is slightly elusive, but this file contains detailed information about it - or, at least, for this version of it.

The scheme had two parts: the first was the conversion of the existing messy junction below the railway viaduct into a huge roundabout which would connect all the approach roads. The second part was the construction of a three-way flyover, which consisted of a second, triangular roundabout elevated above the middle of the first one, with three approaches which would connect to Vauxhall Bridge, the Albert Embankment and South Lambeth Road. Underneath, the middle of the bigger ground-level roundabout would be landscaped with pedestrian subways, and provision would be made for the ticket hall of the future Victoria Line station. Finally, the railway viaduct would be given cladding to make it fit into this picture of the future.

There is one good plan of the scheme at the front of the file. The rest of the document repeatedly promises more plans in an appendix, but needless to say the file long ago had an appendectomy.
