After the Greater London Development Plan was finally published in 1976, its heavily amended form included no new urban motorways, but it did include very vague references to "improving orbital movement" in the sort of corridors that had been vacated by the deleted motorway plans.

The plans stored on aperture cards at this file reference are labelled "GLDP Work" and dated 1976. They appear to be an attempt to create an orbital route in SE London by dualling existing A-Roads, an actual fulfilment of that vague promise to improve orbital links. There are multiple copies of sheets showing the A224 south from the A20 towards Orpington, with boundaries marked that would allow dualling. There's then a cut through some houses to smooth the turn onto Spur Road, and onwards from there dualling of A232 appears to be the idea.

The A20 end refers to the A20(M), either a hangover from pre-1976 or a hint that plan was still being contemplated. The Croydon section includes dualling and a GSJ at the A23 between the Croydon Flyover and the M23, where the proposal ends at a diamond interchange.
