The viaduct was intended to be part of much bigger plans to upgrade the A1 through Gateshead and Newcastle. It remains unfinished at both ends, especially the northern end where there's a ski jump to connect to the unbuilt Central Motorway East Bypass. The contents of this document go a long way to revealing what was planned at the time. In addition to the connection to the Central Motorway there would also have been a long sweeping curve allowing freeflowing movements to and from Askew Road.

Contents of note

  • Large scale plans showing freeflowing connections northwards to the Central Motorway, CME Bypass and Askew Road.
  • A report with a map showing a southwards extension of the dual carriageway bypassing Durham Road to the west.
  • Photographs of a model of the structure.
