Context

The Preston By-pass, Britain's first motorway, was opened in December 1958 by the Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan. This is the booklet issued for guests attending the opening ceremony. It discusses the road's inception and its difficult construction, and features many unique pictures of the road under construction and nearing completion.

The booklet also discusses other Lancashire road plans in the vicinity.
