Context
Prior to the construction of the Mersey Tunnel there had been several other ideas for a fixed road crossing. The Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee itself considered a suspension bridge.
This file details an earlier 1913 proposal for a pontoon bridge across the Mersey. This would obviously have affected shipping and seems to have been rejected on grounds of practicality.
As with the rest of RAIL 475, these documents were collected by the Mersey Railway Company, which was afraid of the competition that a road crossing would provide to its rail tunnel.
