==Context==<br />
In the late 1960s the Birkenhead (Queensway) tunnel was increasingly congested as the only practical route between Liverpool and the Wirral. The tunnel capacity was sufficient but the road network receiving its traffic at each end was considered inadequate.<br />
<br />
This scheme ran parallel to the one described in [[MT 118/261]], and shows proposals for remodelling the approach road and installing flyovers to allow east-west traffic to avoid conflicting with tunnel traffic.<br />
<br />
Only parts of the scheme were built, but the two flyovers shown in this file are clearly the Churchill Way Flyovers, opened in the early 1970s.<br />

* Detailed plans of proposals for the tunnel mouth and surrounding area. Intriguingly, these show toll booths at the tunnel mouth, which must have been scrapped when all toll facilities were moved to Birkenhead.<br />
