==Context==
The viaduct was intended to be part of much bigger plans to upgrade the A1 through Gateshead and Newcastle. It remains unfinished at both ends, especially the northern end where there's a ski jump to connect to the unbuilt Central Motorway East Bypass. The contents of this document go a long way to revealing what was planned at the time. In addition to the connection to the Central Motorway there would also have been a long sweeping curve allowing freeflowing movements to and from Askew Road.
