==Context==
The original Mersey Tunnel running between Liverpool and Birkenhead was choked with traffic by the early 1960s and various schemes were started to relieve it. The most major of these was the construction of the second tunnel to the north, running to Wallasey, but work was also carried out to remove the two subterranean junctions in the original tunnel and to streamline the toll facilities.

This file deals with the work carried out around the Birkenhead portal of the tunnel, including expansion of the toll plaza, construction of large traffic marshalling areas and an extensive network of tunnels and underpasses designed to link the tunnel with major roads without hold-ups.
