==Context==
This file contains the original submission made by the County Borough of Croydon to the Road Board for assistance with funding its proposed bypass - which was made at the improbably early date of 1910. It was incredibly early for a scheme to be made for a new road and part of the justification discusses the rise of the petrol combustion engine, which really is starting at first principles.

At this time the Road Fund was mainly used for surfacing existing roads and new road building wasn't really on the agenda, but a process was negotiated by which the money would be paid on the understanding that Croydon would be highly unlikely to receive contributions for surfacing work for a number of years afterwards, it being considered that it had received its share of the Fund for the forseeable future.

The file contains a letter describing some traffic counts that had been taken in support of the scheme, but sadly not the actual numbers; some suggestions for amendments to the route and its design, which were not taken forward; and a petition that was lodged against the road.
