Motorway monitoring; requests for information from the Greater London Council on new motorways

For the most part this is (in the irritating manner of many HLG 159 files) a set of questions with no associated answers. It is concerned with the GLDP's "secondary roads", and whether they will (as the GLC claims) get quieter thanks to the motorway network or whether they will actually get busier with traffic attempting to reach the motorways.
The question is framed around evidence given to the inquiry panel by J. Michael Thompson on behalf of the London Motorway Action Group. Thompson edited the report "Motorways in London" which was critical of the GLC's plans and which suggested that, contrary to the GLC's assertions, local roads in London would be much more congested with the motorway network in place, thanks to the traffic generated by the motorways inevitably having to use local roads before and after the motorway part of its journey in order to reach its destination. This file may not be very fulfilling but it does shine a light into the extent to which Thompson's report affected the thinking of the inquiry panel.
