London - Fishguard Trunk Road A40: Western Avenue (3rd section) provision of dual carriageways between Alperton Lane and western end of approach to underpass at Hanger Lane, widening of Park Royal station railway bridge

This file is (as its detailed title suggests) concerned with the dualling of the A40 Western Avenue and the underpass at the A406 Hanger Lane. "Third Section" refers to the division of Western Avenue into numbered parts for the purpose of dualling parts of Western Avenue in the 50s. The work was, at that time, an exceptionally high standard improvement in the impoverished post-war roads programme, and the novelty of the Hanger Lane junction is evidenced by the description on the front of the file, which calls it a "flyunder".
There is a lot of dry correspondence about the tedious details of getting a trunk road dualled in the late 1950s and early 60s.
At the back there are four plan sheets, thus:
- 1957 plan sheet of dualling the "Middlesex" section, i.e. west of Hanger Lane
- 1958 plan sheet of dualling the Park Royal section, i.e. east of Hanger Lane
- Plan sheet stamped "Middx CC" showing the western approach to the underpass
- Group of three huge plan sheets, bound up like a book and folded in such a way that great care must be taken not to tear all three apart when unfolding and disentangling them, showing the six phases of construction work and what we would now call traffic management through the work site
The "eventual layout" for the junction is simply a crossroads on top and the underpass below; the inference is that no bigger aspiration for the interchange existed at the time it was built.
