Hampshire County Council: Winchester Bypass (A33); improvement at Bar End Junction

Date range1930 - 1988
LocationNational Archives (see all files stored here)
CatalogueSee entry
File baseSeries MT, subseries MT 152

This file is concerned with the grade separation of the crossroads with the A33 Winchester Bypass and Bar End Road, the old Roman Road to the south of the city. It includes some rather ambitious proposals to provide a full grade separated roundabout with diverted access roads, which presumably was eventually scrapped in favour of a cheap and cheerful improvement before the M3 arrived, sending all the traffic over the top of Twyford Down instead.

Another tidbit from the file reveals that before it was upgraded to the A272 in the 1970s, Bar End Road was numbered the C461.
