MT 39/245
CLASSIFICATION: Re-numbering of the Great North Road from Boroughbridge to Darlington via Scotch Corner
Date range | 1924-1925 |
Location | National Archives (see all files stored here) |
Catalogue | See entry |
File base | Series MT, subseries MT 39 |
This file deals with the first major renumbering exercise the MOT had to deal with in 1924, after they originally routed the A1 between Boroughbridge and Darlington using the historic coaching route via Northallerton (which also conveniently did not leave the Penrith - Hull route requiring two road numbers under the original rules), not the route traffic had taken for years via Scotch Corner, which incurred the wrath of traffic division engineers in the north.
Like several National Archives files, it is good at repeating the same information lots of times, in case you missed it the first time around. It reveals that the original proposal suggested renumbering the A66 from Boroughbridge to Hull as an extension of the A168; alas it gives no indication as to why, ten days or so later, that changed to the A1079.
People with camera copies
Ritchie Swann has camera copies of some of the meeting minutes, and a map of the proposed renumbering.
