Context
Prior to the construction of the Mersey Tunnel there had been several other ideas for a fixed road crossing. The Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee itself considered a suspension bridge.
This file details an earlier 1913 proposal for a pontoon bridge across the Mersey. This would obviously have affected shipping and seems to have been rejected on grounds of practicality.
As with the rest of Category:Subseries RAIL 475, these documents were collected by the Mersey Railway Company, which was afraid of the competition that a road crossing would provide to its rail tunnel.
