Context
As with ACC/3499/EH/08/04/019, this holds English Heritage's correspondence and documents on the subject of Ringway 2, which caused just as much concern over the loss of buildings and sites of historical interest. There are a good number of press cuttings here - most of which can also be found scattered through Ministry files, and mostly relating to the Conservative plan to drop half of Ringway 1 and Ringway 2, forming a bodged circuit of the North Circular and the South Cross Route.
There is also a great deal of correspondence about the saving of Grafton's Factory on Footscray Road, Greenwich, and eventually the GLC agreed to move the protected line of the road to avoid the site. The Greenwich Industrial History Society explain:
- "Also worth adding to the list would be Grafton's Engineering Factory, Footscray Road, and Eltham. They made spools for typewriter ribbons, adding machines, zip fasteners and radio valve pins. All made in a factory hidden by a façade purpose built to look like a large country house. In front of the building was a large garden with a tennis court to create the impression of 'gracious living'. Built in 1919 it was demolished in 1988 to make way for a B&Q store. This must have been a fairly unique piece of architecture."
Contents of note
- Report into a public inquiry at which many requests were made by members of the public to have the line of Ringway 2 altered to follow railway lines instead of cutting a new path between Thornton Heath and Penge. This was rejected because the alignment had been chosen to connect with the proposed Croydon Outer Ring Road.
- A "final draft" consultants' report, prepared by Husband & Co, into the line of Ringway 2 between Chiswick and Wandsworth. It comes with a list of drawings, which are of course not present.
