Context

This file is in a series of 17 files, explained in detail at GLC/DG/PTI/P/05/048.

Within the wider series, this file contains correspondence from July 1969. This was the month in which Ringway 2's route was announced to the public, and the volume of correspondence explodes.

Contents of note

  • A huge volume of letters from understandably horrified and scared residents of South London who have seen the sudden announcement of this new motorway in the newspaper and want to know how soon the GLC will be sending a bulldozer to turn their house into rubble. Some are very eloquent, some are proper "green ink" letters and borderline abusive, some are in such terrible handwriting that they're illegible.
  • Side road orders, with accompanying plans, for the scheme known as the "M23 Delta", which was the trunk road scheme for R2 Colliers Wood to Norbury including the M23 interchange. We have these plans elsewhere but it makes a nice little rest in between all the vitriolic correspondence.
  • Text of a speech made by Robert Vigars announcing R2 to the press. He mentions that the GLC made the whole route public when it did (surely only a week or two after deciding the route at all) so that the process was as open as possible, and so that the maximum certainty could be given to those who lived in its path.
