Thumbs up.png This file is truly delightful.
It is likely to bring a smile to your face, probably because it contains the sort of thing that makes trawling through dusty archive documents worthwhile. The thing in this file that makes your day might actually have nothing to do with its subject matter.

Context

This file is one of six that form a series; the others are listed below. Background information for the set is recorded at MT 106/127.

This is a solid hard-bound "Departments of the Environment and Transport" file with integral ribbons, dating from the 1970s when it was presumably re-potted to tidy up the paperwork. It contains two A4 sheets, which are typed minutes of a meeting between MOT, Surrey CC and GLC about arrangements for traffic when the M3 opened. There are references in it to the Faggs Road Spur; whether same would be viable if the GLC succeeded in moving the D Ring further in to London (seen elsewhere); and what capacity the A316 would have to serve M3 traffic. Some consideration was given at this stage to the problem of the M3 arriving before A316 was built - this later manifested as "throttling" the M3 temporarily.

Then there are two big folders of plans, which are difficult to extract and unwieldy to unfold. Best of British to you. They are, in order:

  1. Plan dated April 1964 showing proposed changes at Park Road, later superceded. This is where the solitary westbound exit slip exists just before Sunbury Cross today.
  2. Misfiled plan sheet of WV Zinn proposal for Western Circus, building underpass east of roundabout with weird LILO slips and roundabouts to either side.
  3. Large colour plan showing Middx CC scheme for A305 as proposed in 1960, including partial grade separation and dotted lines for M3 leading off flat Sunbury Cross roundabout.
  4. Enormous plan showing "final" MCC flyover scheme for The Brown Bear, undated. It's a roundabout GSJ. This is now half diamond GSJ with A314. GSJ as built differs from this, showing the folly of ever naming anything "final".
  5. Similarly enormous plan of "final" MCC flyover scheme for H&A, another roundabout GSJ.
  6. 1963 plan to replace prefab houses alongside A316 east of Hope and Anchor with permanent semis. Never happened.
  7. Alternate 1963 plan for GSJ at The Brown Bear.
  8. A smaller 1963 plan for roundabout GSJ at The Brown Bear.
  9. Same as 4, but here shown as "proposed" rather than "final". No pics
  10. Same as 5, but again, "proposed". No pics
  11. Unfeasibly vast plan of proposed flyover for Sunbury Cross. I don't think I've ever seen a sheet this big at the National Archives. Seems to show roughly what was built, but it's an early MCC sketch idea.
