Context
In the 1960s the Ministry of Transport looked upon the A13, and saw that it was not good, and commanded Freeman, Fox and Partners to go forth and make plans to improve it, or a short section of it anyway. Over the next few years the remit of the consultants was progressively expanded until they were looking at a large part of the A13 within the Greater London area.
Generally the plan was to upgrade it to a dual carriageway, probably with three lanes in each direction and grade-separated junctions. The consultants prepared a report to that effect, which is not here, and one wonders where it might have ended up. The section of road they were looking at included the proposed interchange with Ringway 2, and they drew up plans for it.
Contents of note
- Minutes of a meeting between MOT, GLC and FFP discussing the A13/Ringway 2 interchange. There are vague references to the junction and about releasing plans of the total footprint so that the sewage works adjacent to it could plan expansion works. The plans of the junction, referred to throughout the meeting, are not in this file.
- Consideration given to the need for dual five lane carriageways west of the A125 at Rainham to cope with commuter traffic.
- Lots and lots of detail about an expansion of a council estate near Rainham and how this might affect the A13.
- Misfiled report on the North Orbital Road, as envisaged in November 1965.
- Some plan sheets, including plans of the total footprint of the A13/R2 interchange, which are obviously next to no use.
