Context

This file is concerned with part of the history of the South Orbital Road, which was a long-standing road proposal that was eventually built as the section of M25 between Sevenoaks and Egham. The events here are around its elevation to a motorway scheme following Treasury approval, some discussion of the purpose it would serve and eventually a statement from Barbara Castle, the Minister of Transport, to publicly announce that it would be built as a motorway.

There's also a fair amount of correspondence here from people living and working nearby who were worried about the new road, and stacks of traffic surveys, predictions and diagrams of the local road network with projected flows and turning movements.

One of the key things we learn from this file is that the MOT expected the SOR and the southern side of the D-Ring would both need to be built as the construction of one would have very little impact on the need for the other.
