Context

During the 1960s, the LCC (and later GLC) jointly conducted an experiment with the MOT in which new technologies and ideas in urban traffic control were evaluated in an area of West London to see how much impact they could have on traffic congestion. This was known as the West London Traffic Control Experiment or WLTCE, and ran from 1965 through to about 1969.

This is a fairly slender file but by far the most useful one on the WLTCE: it contains reports and briefing documents intended for high-level use at the MOT and as such explains what they were up to, and why, in straightforward terms.

Contents of note

• An interim report on the WLTCE written for the Minister of Transport in about 1965, setting out the aims of the experiment
• Details of the computer system that was designed for the scheme, its cost, its capabilities, the location it was installed in and the delays that occurred in getting it up and running
• Plans of the study area and details of the number of traffic signals within it that were proposed to be controlled
