Context

Just because the title of this file begins with the words "M25 Egham to Maple Cross", don't believe for a second that it will tell you much about the M25 between Egham and Maple Cross. In here somewhere is the fact that the line for that road was set and published at some point in 1976, but beyond that there is little here to detain you.

No, what this file is really about - this thick, heavy, ponderous file and its follow-up, MT 152/200/2, which is equally thick, heavy and ponderous - is the short spur road from M25 junction 14 to the Western Perimeter Road of Heathrow Airport. Oh, the things this file could tell you about that single kilometre of dual carriageway known as the A3113.

The file begins with a sturdy little book on the subject of Maplin Airport and the reasons the Government would no longer be pursuing it, and then looks at airport capacity projections across the south east of England before really hitting its stride with a lengthy correspondence between the MOT and BAA on the subject of access to Heathrow Airport for the proposed Terminal 4 and whether a spur should be provided where it is now, or a bit to the north, or a bit to the north of that, the route options spanning almost half a mile of semi-industrial Surrey countryside.

At one stage it starts to look as though Surrey County Council's existing long-term scheme for a bypass to Stanwell Moor, enticingly called the Spout Lane Diversion, will be appropriated for the spur's route (which it was, in the end) but before we come to too fast a conclusion someone commissions a detailed study and that's where we must close this book and move on to the next volume.
