Context
This file continues the story started in MT 95/35 of the MOT's 1950s-era "London Through Route Signs" scheme.
It contains a large quantity of tender documents for the procurement of all the signage, and correspondence with the many London Boroughs who part-funded the signs and acted as the MOT's agent for buying and erecting them. There is a lengthy correspondence with and about the London Borough of Stepney who refused to participate for quite some time, disrupting signage on the Inner Ring Road for some years, until they were eventually persuaded to join in the fun.
During this period the scheme was expanded to provide local signage across London too, including on roads away from the major rings and radials that had been identified. There are full colour scale diagrams and specification documents for the types of sign to be made, with fictional destinations.
