This file deals with the first major renumbering exercise the MOT had to deal with in 1924, after they originally routed the A1 between Boroughbridge and Darlington using the historic coaching route via Northallerton (which also conveniently did not leave the Penrith - Hull route requiring two road numbers under the original rules), not the route traffic had taken for years via Scotch Corner, which incurred the wrath of traffic division engineers in the north.
