Each plan is at a very large scale - something like a foot to a mile - and shows a section of street built by the Metropolitan Board of Works. All the new streets pushed through Central London by the MBW in the Victorian era, in an effort to improve the traffic situation, were provided with underground service ducts so that it would not be necessary for the road to be broken up to lay pipes or cables. These plans, therefore, have dozens of multicoloured lines plotted on them indicating what was in all those ducts and where they entered or exited via side passages to reach buildings. | |||

Context
This file is a heavy roll of ancient paper plans, which take considerable effort to unroll and hold flat, and which will make your hands very dirty.
