Context

In the 1960s Glasgow City Council was responsible for possibly the most complete and ambitious transport proposals Britain has ever seen, and together with neighbouring local authorities, commissioned reports from private consultants which set out plans for massive investment in road, rail and bus transportation within the Greater Glasgow area.

The Greater Glasgow Transportation Plan recommended, among many other things, a dense network of urban motorways to be constructed through and around Glasgow. This file contains the plan and many of the papers supporting it, and these appear to be the Treasury's copy of these documents that were forwarded to Whitehall by Glasgow City Council.

The full story of Glasgow's road plans are detailed on CBRD.
