Context
This file is a counterpart to GLC/TD/DP/DC/43/010, and presents a further vast, table-size map of the County of London. It was prepared to accompany the First Review of the 1951 County Development Plan, in which the proposals and schemes that had been set out were updated and amended. Many of the changes were trivial - either removing proposals that had been carried through and were complete, or making adjustments based on changing requirements for zoning, provision of educational facilities, housing and so on. It introduces Comprehensive Development Areas covering the whole of the South Bank from Westminster Bridge to London Bridge, this being the post-industrial redevelopment that gave us the South Bank we know today.
Some of the most noticeable changes are to the road network, where many of the road improvements that were, to modern eyes, quite small-scale and localised in the 1951 proposal are amended or deleted. In this version there are now many more plans for underpasses and flyovers (mainly ones that were built, such as Paddington and Strand), proposals to form gyratories out of existing streets where before there was a plan to demolish buildings for a conventional roundabout, and so on.
What is really noticeable is that lots of proposals for widening and improving roads are cancelled and seemingly not replaced - almost as though the LCC was developing plans for a much bigger road network that wasn't yet ready to appear on the official Development Plan, but which would remove the need to protect the line of smaller improvements.
