Context
In common with the other major conurbations, the local government districts in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sunderland areas came up with a master plan for their future transport needs.
That part of the country "thought big" with a major road network improvement, including major urban motorway network for Newcastle and Gateshead; as well as improvements to rail services, bus lanes and the Metro. As we know, pretty much everything other than the Metro was cancelled.
