Context

As in many other parts of London, the Borough of Greenwich was unhappy with the GLC's choice of road alignments through its patch and took some alternative proposals to the GLDP inquiry.

They had gone a step further than most other local authorities, and commissioned a study by WS Atkins and Partners to look into alternatives to the construction of a dense box of motorways and interchanges in the vicinity of Eltham, where Ringway 1, Ringway 2, the A2 and A20 would all connect. Their alternative proposal hinged on rescuing Eltham from having the A2 driven through it, and re-configured the other sides of the box so that this section could be omitted. They also proposed a different line for Ringway 1 that avoided the centre of Blackheath.

Ironically, within the next fifteen years, the roads they wished to keep would all be cancelled, and the only part of the box that would ever be built was the A2 through Eltham.

Contents of note

  • Diagrams, including junction layouts, of all the junctions in the Eltham/Blackheath area, as proposed by the GLC.
  • Arguments for changes to the GLC's plans and detailed proposals for alternatives.
