Context

Just as today, in the 1950s local authorities were expected to produce and submit development plans to central government to set out their policies for improvement and investment in their areas. This file contains the plan submitted by the County Borough of Croydon in 1953.

One key plank of this plan were a series of road improvements, including much of what was eventually built as the Ring Road. The plan describes an early series of plans for this route, and various other proposed road improvements across the Borough.

Plan drawings accompanying this file are in MT 106/7.

Contents of note

  • Drawings of a planned new road bridge at West Croydon Station, and new bus station inside a large roundabout at its eastern end. This would link London Road to Wellesley Road avoiding the notorious crossroads at West Croydon, and as a road scheme would be most welcome even today.
  • List of other proposed road schemes, including a large number of dual carriageway projects which never saw the light of day.
