It is likely to bring a smile to your face, probably because it contains the sort of thing that makes trawling through dusty archive documents worthwhile. The thing in this file that makes your day might actually have nothing to do with its subject matter.

Context

This is one of those really great files that you get that turns up exactly what it says on the tin.

Whilst it does not contain very much information at all about Motorway signage, it is the primary file regarding motorway numbering.

Contents of note

This file contains in great detail the memos and hand-written suggestions and maps regarding the motorway numbering scheme, including proposed (and rejected) schemes, numbers, and ends with allowing three-digit motorway numbers. There's correspondance with the public and with other bodies like the AA.

In short, it's a treasure trove.
