Context
This file is a direct continuation of MT 152/387/1 and you will find the context of both described there.
Here are slightly later files relating to Dartford, though none actually later than 1982. It is still principally obsessed with the number and siting of toll booths. There are proposals here to move the southbound tolls to the Essex side of the tunnel to slow traffic approaching from the new M25, or to toll only northbound traffic. Neither was attempted.
There is some interesting material here about the manager of the Dartford Tunnels speaking to the press about his fears of the inadequacy of the tunnels and suggesting that another two bores would be needed very soon. The DTp seem utterly surprised at the idea that the tunnels may not be sufficient and decide they will need to be able to answer this sort of odd criticism with some facts.
