The main content of this file is an insight into the Trunk Road Numbering system, an internal system for identifying trunk roads that has little to no relationship with the more familiar 'A' and 'B' road system. It includes proposals for simplifying the system (at the time, each specific length of road to be trunked had to be allocated a new number, even if it was an extension of an earlier route, such as the North Orbital Road).
It also includes some tentative plans for motorway numbering, following the trunk road numbering system, such as the M7 from London to South Wales and the M6 to Newcastle, all outlined on a map.
