Thumbs up.png This file is truly delightful.
It is likely to bring a smile to your face, probably because it contains the sort of thing that makes trawling through dusty archive documents worthwhile. The thing in this file that makes your day might actually have nothing to do with its subject matter.

Context

No disappointment here: this is just a yellow folder containing a stack of plans. It's not a complete set of construction plans - in fact it's not a complete set of anything - rather, it's everything held by the Commission for the New Towns (CNT) relating to the A41(M). However, there's more than enough here to cover the full route of the proposed motorway as a black line on a map (of the sort generated by legal orders) and most of the route is also here as section plans, including all junction layouts.

The folder had nothing written on it until I visited and attempted to order it. Before handing it over the archivist wrote its catalogue number on the front so it wouldn't get lost again.

Contents of note

  • Folios of side road orders for the Berkhamsted and Kings Langley bypasses, both strongly suggesting that Berkhamsted would be first of three. In reality the Tring Bypass was built first.
  • A massive copy of an OS sheet that would cover the whole route of the A41(M), but with none of the A41(M) marked on it. It's just a map.

People with camera copies

Chris Marshall has a partial copy.
